Spoken Arabic

Let me be very frank here!

  • If you want to learn the basics of spoken Arabic (just to survive), then my strong suggestion (if you are a Muslim because you already know what you recite in daily Salah) is: Try to talk to Allah everyday in Salah with understanding.  It will become much easier to talk to people in Arabic.  This will give you a huge opportunity to learn as well as practice Arabic almost an hour everyday.
  • So, even if you are interested in learning spoken Arabic, go through our short course.  The words covered there constitute almost 40% of basic spoken Arabic dialogues.
  • If your intention is to learn Arabic to understand Qur’an, then don’t waste your time learning the Spoken Arabic first!
  • It varies from region to region.  The spoken Arabic of Algeria is much different from that of Saudia or of Egypt.  The samples we have here are from Saudi Arabia (since a huge number of Muslims visit Makkah and Madinah).
  • Arabic is diglossic, meaning the spoken Arabic is much different from literary Arabic.   Even the professors who teach Arabic talk in spoken Arabic style when it comes to discussions.
  •  As a part of our course (especially the long course), we do have one or sentences in every lesson.  These sentences are provided here.  I will still suggest you to go through our long course (just 25 hours) and inshaAllah you will get a stronger hold on Arabic.  Even spoken Arabic will then become much easy to learn.
  •  For non-Muslim brothers and sisters, I would say, I am sorry that I don’t have much here just for spoken Arabic.  But you can still learn a lot of simplified Arabic grammar in our short course section.  I am sure you will love our TPI approach for teaching grammar.  You can of course go through the full short course.  It will be easy then to understand Muslim’s (more than a billion people) beliefs and culture.
  • For teachers of Arabic, an excellent discussion is there on “Communicative Competence in Arabic” in “Handbook for Arabic Language Teaching Professionals in the 21st Century,”  by Kassem Wahba, Zeinab Taha and Liz England, published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, in 2006.
